PROBLEM
This table by the front door is a drop zone for mail, keys, newspapers, and bags. "Clutter like this happens when things aren't put in an assigned spot," says Rothschild.

PLAN OF ATTACK: Control the flow from the get-go. Don't plop stuff anywhere; sort it, store it, and create a system to transform this area into an organized hub.

SOLUTION#1: MAIL ORDER
Sort mail into containers marked for each person in the house, leaving one empty for outgoing letters and bills.

SOLUTION#2: CAN IT
Put a trash bin nearby and chuck junk mail the minute you get home.

SOLUTION#3: KEYS, PLEASE
No more missing-keys mornings. Put them in the same bowl or tray every day.

SOLUTION#4: PUT A LID ON
Place items you want to take with you when you leave the house (CDs for your Walkman, work papers, Palm Pilot) in a box with a top so you can hide them when company comes over.

SOLUTION#5: HIDING PLACE
Stash stuff here to be dealt with later: school memos, invites, etc. Sift through contents when you have a free moment.

SOLUTION#6: READING ROOM
Keep catalogs and newspapers in baskets: one for current reads, one for recycling.
